»Ich drehte meine Zunge ins Deutsche, und plötzlich war ich glücklich.« Sprachbewusstheit und Neuinszenierungen des Themas Sprache in den Texten Emine Sevgi Özdamars
Against a background of concepts relevant to the issue of migration, such as cultural hybridity and the close interweaving of culture and language, the paper seeks to shed light on the phenomenon of the construction of plural identities by multilingual people who on the basis of both their inner and outer plurilingualism shape language in a completely new performative manner. Unlike the approach taken by those authors who belong to the strand of literature known as Betroffenheitsliteratur (literature of concern), however, this new language does not serve to describe the disconnection between two worlds caused by the migration situation, but rather to express the individual’s own identity in a third place that is part of a transcultural communication space. Taking Emine Sevgi Özdamar’s literary texts as an example, the paper seeks to explore the way these performative re-stagings are carried out. The focus is on the theme of language itself as the place where conscious experimentation with new language codification forms is performed, with the dimension of figurativeness, corporeality and spatiality acquiring a central role and the consciously enacted mixing and cross-breeding of different language codes making a decisive contribution to the Turkish author’s attempt to identify her cultural place.
