The “humanistic flowering” of Sicily and the sicilian-latin bilingual dictionary of L.C. Scobar
In this article, I will examine the Sicilian-Latin bilingual dictionary known as the Vocabularium Nebrissense ex Siciliensi sermone in Latinum L. Christophoro Scobare Bethico Interprete traductum, written by the Andalusian humanist Lucio Cristoforo Scobar (c. 1460-1526) and published in Venice in 1519. Scobar had different goals: promoting knowledge of Spanish among Sicilians and of Sicilian among the Castilians (both being the languages spoken in different territories within the same Kingdom), as well as creating a tool for teaching Latin. Some lexemes (many among them geographically marked) occur for the first time, thus demonstrating the varied linguistic repertoire of (cultivated) speakers in sixteenth century Sicily. Scobar’s presence in Sicily and his work associate the island’s cultural activity with the wider European landscape, enabling us to trace the indisputable appetite for study in sixteenth century Sicily.
