Zero degree code-switching and the narrative framework
The last decades have been characterized by a growing interest in literary multilingualism. Multiple studies have examined the way linguistic diversity manifests itself, fewer have analysed latent multilingualism, pointing out that languages could still be present in a text even when they are not immediately perceptible. In this article we aim to offer a new tool of analysis called “zero degree code-switching” (=ZCS) (Domokos 2018, 2020) corresponding to a specific type of code-switching (the zero form), in which the language switch which usually takes place in code-switching does not occur. ZCS offers writers the chance to deal with multilingualism in a way which would be unthinkable otherwise. By approaching ZCS in its narrative complexity, we will not only focus on the examination of the hidden or latent multilingual practices occurring at the linguistic level of the text but we will also present the way the communication levels of a literary narrative are interconnected between them thanks to this versatile narrative tool.
