Polyphonie und Polylingualität. Zur narrativen Funktionalisierung der Fremdsprachen in der Miniserie Im Angesicht des Verbrechens (2010)
The subject of this paper is to link the question of foreign language representation in fictional feature films with the question of the conflict between foreignness and integration as presented in the miniseries Im Angesicht des Verbrechens [“In the Face of Crime”] by Dominik Graf. Point of departure is that foreign languages are represented in different ways on film. The spectrum ranges from mimetic representation through a native-language portrayal without subtitles to the non-mimetic reproduction of the foreign language in the film language (German). There are many gradations in between. In the following interpretative parts of the paper, the varying foreign language representation is examined for its functions. Two can be identified: an authenticity aimed at through polylinguality (= artistically produced multilingualism) and a commentary on the German present aimed at through polyphony (= mutually contradictory values).
